Automatic voter registration makes a ton of sense — assumes people want to opt in. It also makes elections more secure by assuring that people’s information is up to date. In the US at least, it’s a bipartisan reform area for sure. Looking back, our system still has legacy issues that tie voting rights to property ownership and having a fixed addressed. But people are more transient than they used to be and anyone who has to move a lot — students, low income workers, renters, is at a structural disadvantage.
